# Action class

> The typed action an agent requests authorization for.

An **action class** is the `type` field on an `action`. It's the key AtlaSent uses to match against the policy's rule set.

```json theme={null}
{
  "actor":  { "id": "agent-001", "type": "ai_agent" },
  "action": { "id": "act-7f3c", "type": "healthcare.record.amend" },
  "target": { "id": "patient-42", "type": "ehr_record", "environment": "production" }
}
```

The action class in this request is `healthcare.record.amend`.

## Naming convention

Lowercase, dot-separated segments: `<domain>.<verb>` or `<domain>.<object>.<verb>`. The v1 API validates `action_type` against `^[a-z][a-z0-9_]*(\.[a-z][a-z0-9_]*)+$`, so at least one dot is required and colons are rejected. Where one exists, use the canonical action slug. Examples:

| Class | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `healthcare.record.amend` | Amend (not overwrite) a healthcare record |
| `data.modify` | Create or modify records in a regulated system |
| `data.export` | Export data out of the regulated system |
| `production.deploy` | Deploy a change to production |
| `trial.unblinding.execute` | Unblind a clinical trial |
| `agent.tool.invoke` | Invoke a tool on behalf of an AI agent |

<Tip>
  Keep classes coarse (10s, not 1000s). Policy rules are what make them fine-grained — the class only needs to distinguish actions that plausibly have different decisions.
</Tip>

## `target.environment`

`production`, `staging`, `dev`. Policies often have stricter rules for `production` (for example, `escalate` in prod, `allow` in staging).

## Not the same as "tool name"

The action class is about **regulatory meaning**, not framework plumbing. `healthcare.record.amend` is the class whether the agent uses LangChain, LlamaIndex, or a raw HTTP call. The tool name is implementation; the class is what the FDA or EMA cares about.
